Solvents are chemicals found in products like aerosol sprays, glue, paint, petrol, lighter fluid, nail polish remover, cleaning products etc. As they are found in everyday products, they might seem harmless. However, misusing them can be dangerous and sometimes fatal. Some people misuse solvents by inhaling/sniffing the fumes to feel high or relaxed.
People don't know that even one-time use of solvents can be deadly.
The Risks of Misusing Solvents:
- Sudden Death
Solvents can cause your heart to stop suddenly – even if you’re young and healthy. This is called sudden sniffing death.
- Brain Damage
Solvent use can damage your brain, affecting memory, focus, and mood. Long-term use can cause lasting mental health issues.
- Accidents & Injuries
Feeling high on solvents makes you lose coordination and judgement. This can lead to falls, burns, and risky decisions. Can cause burning or rush around your mouth and nose.
- Mental Health Impact
Instead of helping with stress, solvent use can actually make anxiety, depression, and paranoia worse.
- Addiction
Some students think it’s “just a one-off,” but repeated use can become hard to control.
Legal Stuff
- It’s illegal for shops to sell solvents to anyone they believe will misuse them.
- It's illegal to supply solvents to persons under the age of 18.
- Using solvents to get high isn’t a criminal offence, but you can still face:
- University disciplinary action
- Eviction from student housing
- Serious health consequences
