A Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is a free and confidential NHS service for anyone who has experienced sexual assault or sexual abuse. SARCs support people of all genders, and you do not need to report what has happened to the police to access the service.

SARCs provide a safe and supportive space where you can talk to trained professionals who understand what you may be going through. They can offer medical care, emotional support, and practical information about your options. If you choose to involve the police, SARCs can arrange a forensic medical examination carried out by specialist staff. If you are unsure about reporting, you can still attend a SARC and take time to decide what feels right for you.

SARCs can also help you access ongoing support, such as counselling, sexual health services, or referrals to other local support organisations.

You can access a SARC in a few different ways. You can contact a SARC directly yourself, or you may be referred by the police, a GP, a hospital, or your university wellbeing or student support service. Many SARCs are available 24 hours a day.

If you have experienced sexual violence, support is available whenever you are ready to reach out.
