On Sunday 7th September 2025 at around 3pm, all mobile phones in the UK will receive a test emergency alert from the UK government. For more information and how to opt out please read our article: UK Emergency Alerts: How to Stay Safe.

On Sunday 7th September 2025 at around 3pm, all mobile phones in the UK will receive a test emergency alert from the UK government. The nationwide system was developed to warn everyone in the event of an emergency situation, such as extreme weather or a risk to life in the local area.

This is the second test of the system that has been carried out. On the 7th September, your phone will make a loud siren sound for approximately 10 seconds, even if the phone is in silent mode. You do not need to take any action, and the alert will clearly state it is for testing purposes only.

We are mindful that this alert may increase risks for some vulnerable groups, for example, people who are experiencing domestic violence who may have a hidden phone.

Survivors can opt out from receiving emergency alerts to avoid their device from being detected.

How to opt out

For iPhone

To opt out, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off ‘Severe alerts’ and ‘Emergency alerts.’ If this does not work, contact your device manufacturer.

For Android

To opt out, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off ‘Severe alerts’ and ‘Emergency alerts’. On some devices, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off ‘Extreme threats’, ‘Severe threats’ and ‘Show amber alerts’.

Refuge’s tech team have put together information for survivors with an iPhone or Android on how to opt-out of the system. You can also find out more at gov.uk/alerts and on the guidance provided by Women's Aid and Refuge.
