National Hate Crime Awareness Week (NHCAW) will run from 14th-21st October 2023. This marks a national week of action to encourage local authorities, stake holders and communities affected by hate crime to work in collaboration to address local hate crime issues.

What is a hate crime?

Hate crimes encompass criminal acts directed at an individual due to animosity or bias, which can stem from factors such as:

•         disability
•         race, ethnicity or nationality
•         religion, faith or lack of
•         sexual orientation
•         transgender identity

These offenses can be perpetrated against either a person or property. It's important to note that anyone could potentially become a victim of a hate crime, regardless of whether they belong to the group toward which the hostility is directed.

What is a hate incident?

A hate incident is an incident or event in which a person is targeted or subjected to offensive behaviour, harassment, or hostility due to their perceived race, religion, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or transgender identity. Unlike a hate crime, a hate incident may not necessarily involve a criminal offense, but it is still a harmful and hurtful act that can cause distress and create a hostile environment for the targeted individual or group. Hate incidents are often considered as precursors to hate crimes and can contribute to the escalation of hostility and tension within a community. It's important to report hate incidents to appropriate authorities or organisations so that they can be addressed and monitored to prevent further escalation or harm.
